I got a 150 gallon aquarium it’s 6’x18”x28” and it’s got 2 Oscars who I love but the family wants a community tank like my 75 gallon in my room. I just helped a friend set up a 55 with penguin tetras Bolivian rams and a king tiger pleco now it’s a cool looking tank for sure but I need some more ideas for my own. The Oscars obviously would be rehomed. The substrate is black diamond sand blasting sand and that won’t change I love the stuff. I do have a buddy willing to rig me up a co2 distributor only thing I’d have to buy would be plant lights since the ones on it now are LEDs not made for plant growth and I’ve never tried with them. There would be 4 feather fins in there ( they get along fine they each got there own areas and caves) so featherfins and a bristlenose pleco would be the only things staying in that tank? I love the penguin tetras I love the Bolivians I’d like a elephant nose fish again maybe a small group of discus? Cardinal tetras or maybe some torpedo barbs? I’ve never tried a community tank this big. It does have a fx6 underneath that’s it though.

Some amazon puffers may be nice as a centerpiece.
Beyond that, I like the idea of a large school of tetras, maybe with some silver dollars or dwarf cichlids.

Silver dollars wouldn’t do well with plants.
A community tank that size would look nice with some dwarf cichlids, large schools of tetras or barbs, and maybe angelfish or discus as the main centerpiece fish.

Oh, yeah. I missed that it was a planted tank, no silvers.

This is going to be an awesome tank. Just to be sure we aren't crossing common names what is a featherfin? I have heard several fish called this.

I would avoid the elephant nose as they tend to get out competed.

When I hear 150 community I think of a few things. Assuming your water isn't extreme and you are able to straddle water needs. The large school of penguins is a great call. It is hard to imagine this without a large school of cories or loaches maybe metae or melanistius for cories, and striatas or Burmese botias. A school of turquoise rainbows is also a great addition. Watching them flash in the mornings is a great display. If you want other tetras I like congos and diamonds. Both bring different things to the table and look amazing as they ages. Big schools of redeyes, von rios, or Colombian red and blues are other options. Florida flagfish could be cool in there and they eat some algae. I feel like the tank could use a big gourami like pearl leeri.

For a show piece fish in there I like a spiny eel. Cichlids aren't a bad fit either I like your idea with the rams. Festivums are another fish that gets forgotten.

While you may barely see them I love having banjo cats in a tank like this. They will always be a hiding, but it is fun when they pop out. You never know they may even spawn there.

These are a few options. I wouldn't do all of them, but you should find something fun in here.

You could make a SA community tank. Im not sure abt discus and featherfin compatibility but if it works go for it. You can mix SA cichlids like discus, angels, festivums, severum or maybe even some german rams or other dwarves. Any combo of such should work out fine as long as the discus are added first. Flagtail prochilodus could also be a shout. If you keep a small group of discus say 6-7 you could add a smaller group of angels say 4-5. Check out the different strains of angels such as rio manaapuru angels, rio nanay angels or altums. Also different severum species or river strains. I think the ideas I listed above should work but would probs wait for more experienced people. Also if you still want large fish you could try growing out an aro in the tank and rehoming it when it gets big right? Not sure about that.

would featherfins happen to be syno. eupterus?
removing the oscars or lack of another large fish to pester will have the aggression happen
i tried to move my oscillated syno out of my more aggressive tank and the bugger became a bully to some senegal bichirs so he had to move ba k
