Hi. I just picked up a used 200 gallon aquarium. I thought I could use my stand from my 180; however, there is a 6" overhang (3" on each end). The tank is 72.5" wide x 24.5" deep x 25.5" tall Oceanic. The stand is 66.5" wide x 24.5" deep 2x4 construction. Old tank was 63.5" x 22" x 29.5".

Question: will the old stand support the new tank w /3" overhang on each side & exact alignment front to back?

I posted here in the event someone has learned a lesson about overhanging stand on large tanks that could help me out.

A good stand reinforcing all sides of the aquarium is essential to the longevity of the seals. Seeing how the stand is constructed from 2x4, it should be easy to extend the stand.
Alternatively, put a thick top on the existing stands that are the footprint of the tank. For example, I used a Formica countertop for one of my 180s on a wood shell.

Thanks. For the replies. I'll look into extending the stand and/or plywood.

And to think, I may have been robbed of 20 gallons! If I recall, the calculations was closer to 193 gallons, but who's counting?

I guess no one out there has successfully just let it hang.

So, I'll be on my way to HD for supplies.

Or maybe I just gained 20 gallons! But still a monster tank. Goodluck with it.

im putting my new 75g. on a 55 gal stand . same situation but i have a steel stand im just going to frame 2by4's the dimensions of my metal frame and extend the with then cap it with a new piece of 3/8in plywood slightly bigger than my tanks footprint. should be ok.

55 gallons and 75 gallons have some leeway but when you go up in the 200's thats 1668 pounds of water alone. Its all about scaleablitly, its easier to make a small childs toy go a scale of 300mph but nearly impossible to get a average size car to go 300mph. I would recommend expanding the stand with simple 2x4's

Hi. I know it's been a while.

To follow up, I extended the back of a 120 gal stand. I added a 1/2" plywood sub-base for footing, 2x4 studs, and another 1/2" plywood top. I covered that all with a polystyrene insulating sheet from Lowes to account for any shifting under pressure.

I cut out holes for the existing overflow. I ended up using the holes to run my canister system w/ UV sterilizer instead of the sump.

It was first set up as a palludarium for my lizards. 1/2 water.

This was until I rescued some pacus and oversized cichlids from seperate owners. The pacus were badly beaten up, missing fins, scales, and having mouth rot.

During the palludarium phase, I accidentally discovered blackwater, which was inadvertently being created by the coco fiber, live plants, and driftwood.

Unfortunately, while the tank was full with the pacus, the reason it was so cheaply priced became evident the weekend before Christmas when I awoke to wet floors and 40 or so gallons of water in empty tanks / buckets I was storing under the tank.

I was lucky that I caught the leak as I was heading to work instead of after coming home. The cause was the seam for the unused overflow box, which had a leak above my palludarium fill level. (As a rule of thumb I should have re sealed the entire tank first).

It is resealed and up and running now. Pics to follow.

This sounds like a bad idea to use a stand that is not built to hand a tank that is larger then it. The reason is that the glass tank is supported on it's rims and not the belly part of it. I would invest or build a new stand to be safe.
