I've recently acquired a new 29 gallon tank, but I'm looking to trade it in for a 30. I want to stock this with a good looking and hopefully friendly centerpiece fish (on the bigger side). I'd like to be able to keep a dither or some other type of school in there as well along with a small pleco.
What suggestions can everyone give me for the centerpiece fish.

Female Salvini, Rotkiel/Gold/Green Severum.

Honestly there aren't many centerpiece fish that can do well in 30 gallons of water. Severum will do fine with smaller fish that don't fit in its mouth like High-bodied Tetra or Barbs, I don't think the Salvini will.

As already stated, not much can go in a 30 gallon . . . a nice planted tank with a couple of pairs of rams and a school of rummy nose tetras, some neons, danios, and corys for clean up would look great as a center piece. Just stay away from anything that'll get over 8".

way too small for a severum, sevs get pretty big.

It's bare minimum, but very doable, and I'm usually quite strict on what I believe can be stocked. Certainly isn't "way too small". With that said, I wouldn't put a Severum in such a small tank but it's certainly a possibility. I'm presuming this '30' has a larger footprint than a 29, too. I don't know Americas ridiculous tank sizing method (29, 55, 40 breeder, etc.) too well.

29g is 12x30, yeah it would hold a severum, but it would be swimming in circles all day long.

He said he might be swapping it for a 30, whatever size that is. I know the size of 29's and 12" isn't wide enough, something like a 36x15x15" (a typical tank size over here) would be much better.

If I decided on a severum, then I would be using a 36X12X18 inch tank...I guess that'd be kind of cramped. Any other suggestions for a colorful fish?
