Finally got my hands on a 300 gallon stock tank as pictured up above, its not 500 but it will do for now. So this is where you guys need to help me out, please. I have a pretty good general idea of how im going to work the filter. It will be a seperate tank sitting ground level with this stock tub and the overflow will drain directly into the sep. tank and pumped back it. Preferably a 55 gallon tank will be used with lots of bio media.

Now my question and much needed advice. I need something to keep this bad boy heated in CNY in an unheated basement which gets pretty chili. Any ideas for very reliable heaters or really strong ones. Jakoozie heaters, water bed heaters, any ideas?

Bump, I was thinking the same with winter coming.

heres a calculator for glass and acrylic you can use one of them as a default and just type your dimensions of you tank which i beleave 300 gallon stock tank like yours is 63"L x 69"W x 25"H thickness i don't know but anyways type all the other stuff in and it might give you a decent idea on what to do..it wont be accurate but you can mess around with ithttp://boonedocks.net/fishtank/ftweb.php

indoor in a basement that is not heated. it doesnt go below freezing down there but it gets pretty darn cold. Dont have a accurate temperature, but id say somewhere in the fourty degree range, ) =.

you think one of those 800 watt jarri heaters will work,(titanium) mabye even two

maybe 2 one on each end

Put the stock tank on a sheet of (styro) insulation and also keep it covered with styro insulation (when you're not looking at it). You can also wrap it in insulation.

I've never had a problem with heaters melting a stock tank (just placed on the bottom / side), but to be safe I usually float them in a piece of styro (stick the heater thru the styro).

If you don't insulate and cover the stock tank, it will cost you a fortune to heat.

I would build a wooden box to put it in and get it the hold system off the ground. Fill the spaces between the pond and the box with insulation. Also would get a lid for it to keep the heat in once u get it heated. I would go titanium heater but make sure u spend the money to buy them new i have heard way to many story of used ones breaking.

The thick pink styrofoam insulation is your friend!!! I used a whole bunch of this when I built a 500 gallon pond in my bvasement. Granted the basement is heated it is still a basement. I used this pink stuff in the walls on the bottom and covered the top of the pond all with 1.5 inch thick stuff. I was able to heat this thing in the middle of winter to a temp of 84 degrees with a single 300 watt heater.
