okay are there any native fish that i can go catch in a pond/stream that can be kept in a 35g!!!!

sunfish?
perch?
bass?
there are some pike in the pond near me 2 i could get one of them 2?

i want to catch it thought not buy cause i cant affored to buy those fish

i live in northern New Jersey

The only native you can keep in a 35G I would recommend is a minnow... and it's better off if you buy the reject rosy reds from the petstore. I would recommend 10 or 15G of space, then 5G per minnow.

Whatever, I must ask, are REJECT rosy reds?

Sort of like going to the bottom of the bucket with that one... LOL

Reject rosy reds? Rejected Rosy red fatheads that are not their aquarium colour... of course! Fathead minnows in the wild are not normally in that colour. Sometimes you will see them in their natural colour, and some pet stores will give those ones for free since it doesn't revenue any income for some weird reason. I guess it just doesn't appeal to costumers or something.

If you can find them in NJ (they are there) :

eastern mudminnow
blackbanded sunfish
banded sunfish
bluespotted sunfish
pirate perch
various cyprinids

:headbang2

all great fish and suited for a tank that size.

There are no fish on your list that really should be kept long term in a 35. You could use it for a growout for a couple listed, but that is about all. I suggest spending some time learning about native fish first. That tank could house quite a few really cool natives if you could pull yourself away from gamefish. Seems that almost all new native keepers focus on gamefish, likely because that is what they are familiar with, but there is a whole different world out there once you start educating yourself on the species that are seldom seen, and much more suitable to aquarium life.
Look at darters, shiners, pygmy sunfish, mudminnow.
Grab a petersons field guide, and start looking at what is in your area, you will find many interesting species, and seeing them in their natural habitat will possibly become more fun than actually keeping them. Get a seine net, consult your local laws, and have fun in the water.

Good advice from Skipjack!

Baby sunfish are pretty small and there are lots of kinds/colors that are very cool in aquariums. Pumpkinseeds, Orange Spotted, Longear are some of my favorites. I think you could keep them in the 35g for a while, but yes, they will outgrow the 35. However if you really enjoy the fish, perhaps you could look at a new tank for when they get bigger. Get yourself a 75g or so when they get bigger.
