40 gallon eel?

I'd say a Zig Zag eel that tops out at about 6" is your best bet. You could also do a peacock that will likely get to 10-12" if you want something bigger. I'd so soft substrate, or fine gravel, as they will sometimes bury themselves. Give plenty of places to hide, otherwise they will jump. I recommend PVC pipe, driftwood, etc. As for tank mates, do not put anything small enough to fit in their mouths. As long as you don't go with smaller than a neon tetra you'll be fine, although some people keep them together with no problem. Overall, I'd say go with a Zig Zag.

Well I'm assuming your tank is freshwater, therefore there are not a lot of commonly available smaller specimens of eel. I don't know much about elipsifiers, but there might be a smaller one of those. There are tons of options with a 40 gallon, just not really eel-wise. What do you have in the tank right now?

Well I personally am not a big cichla guy. I would pick a tropical community over cichlids any day. If it's a 40 gallon breeder then you have even more options. I would get a peacock eel, maybe some angelfish or a gourami as your centerpiece and then get some tetras to add color and contrast with your centerpiece. I'd also do live plants and driftwood of you're interested in that. Provide plenty of hiding places for your eel. From what I've heard and researched, peacocks are pretty shy and will bury themselves. Honestly, unless you're going to get a fire eel or tire track eel I'd say don't waste your money. I have a zig zag eel and he hides all day. He's not colorful like a fire, or big with a nice pattern like a tire track. I've seen no personality yet from it. Just my two cents lol
