well with a 75 you do have sooome play room, but you'll probably have to trial and error.
you'll most likely have to go with 2 males and the rest females..like a colony

Ok... Community... Do you want pairs and fry, or singletons? How many fish would you like to have in the tank? Pairs would obviously cut down on numbers, as would larger sizes.

I'll take you at your word, and figure singletons and smallish so you can have more fish... Firemouth, mixteco, Honduran red points, sajica, cutteri, convicts, multispinosa, keyholes, spinossisimus, rams, angels, apistos, female nicaraguense, female salvini. All are possibilities, but as you choose a fish, you eliminate some others as possiblities. For example, if you go with small fish: rams, apistos, you eliminate larger and nastier fish like firemouth and salvini. If you pick docile fish like keyholes, you eliminate the nasty fish. You also have to watch out for crosspairs: Convict with ANYTHING, hrp with sajica, firemouth with mixteco, etc.

So... Possibilities:

1. Firemouth, hrp, female nic, sajica/multispinosa. A hrp and sajica combination might pair, but the other two would be big enough and hearty enough to deal.

2. Ram, apisto, keyhole, angel. You could even have pairs here since these guys are either small or mild-mannered.

3. Putting the female sal into the picture eliminates everything but the nic and firemouth (and you'd still need some luck, imo).

The spino is a very mild fish like the keyhole. Cutteri is going to be similar to the sajica or hrp. Multispinosa is hard to classify; very active fish, very personable, usually pretty mild, but I wouldn't put it in the same category as a keyhole or spino. Mixteco are a slightly less nasty version of Thorichthys (like firemouth).

Convicts are small, but feisty... AND... As mentioned, they would breed with ROCKS if they could! :grinno:

They're south american, but a group of Gymnogeophagus would work great.

When I had my 75 set up CA, I had two Thorichthys pairs (one maculipinnis, one aureus) and a single Nic. Right now, I'm growing out a group of Gymnogeophagus to set up a cooler water SA community in my 75 in the future

if you want more variety in cichlids, go with single specimens, and have no pairs..downside being it eliminates the parenting aspect that makes cichldis so great

Well I know you said centrals and I think most of these recommendations are SA's, but pending on how many fish you wanted in your tank, you could go with a green terror, severums, jack dempseys, firemouths, salvini, convicts, blood parrots. All of these fish should get along pretty easily. At one point, when I was more of a noob, I had a 75 with a jack dempsey, 2 oscars, 2 salvini, 3 firemouth and 3 or 4 african zebra cichlids. Yeah... fairly crowded but it was a rad tank! Good luck!

My 75g has been up about 8 months now. My goal was a community type setting that was interesting and interactive without too much aggression.

It seems like going with smaller growing Cichlids and keeping it all female, I now have a great tank that is fun to watch.

The one Nic turned out to be a male and they paired up, but so far no spawns. Seemes like he is getting frustrated that she wont lay eggs and he will chase her a bit. But then she goes back to his side and snuggles up and all is well.

The HRP and Centrarchus paired up and lay eggs but they stick to their nest under the root and short chases will ensue if anyone gets too close.

The Mixteco is a bit of a runt and keeps to her self. She is starting to color up now.

The white HRP is a flirt and trys sucking up to everyone.

The Con is real pretty with long extensions and non aggressive.

Thanks for looking. I know everyone likes pics. BTW, I use an OLD 1.3 megapixel camera that takes great pics IF the target is not moving at all.

I though others would like to see how this stocking list works out.

....Bill

thanks for all the suggestions.

from what i gathered, its a good idea to stay away from pairings. i'm leaning towards a single species tank. so my question now are:

which species?
all males or all females???

oh and i'm picking up a 90gallon, same print just, 4" higher.
