So I have a 75g tank that I'm going to carpet with montecarlo, and I'll probably throw in some amazon swords in the back. The tank has a 15 gallon sump with a 450gph pump (after factoring in loss of gph over distance), and i'll be doing a fishless cycle of course. I really want a couple of eb acaras to be the highlight in the lower to mid levels of the tank, with maybe some pearl gourami as a top dweller, i'm not sure. I've never kept eb acars before, so I just want to ask a couple of questions to make sure I do it right the first time. How many eb acaras would it be appropriate to have in such a tank? Is it possible at all to put cherry shrimp in a tank with eb acaras, or will they become feeder shrimp? I'd also like to hear any stocking suggestions people might want to share.

I would stick with just a pair, after starting with six and letting them pair up on their own.
I would also have either cory cats or hopolo cats, a group of tetras, and a busynose pleco.

Is it possible to end up with any more than a pair, or is that a bad idea? I like the idea of some sterbai or panda corys, any maybe some neon tetra? But i have a bushynose in another tank, and honestly while theyre efficient theyre not my favorite in terms of cleanup crews. Id much rather a group of cherry shrimp, or amanos if those are a bad idea with eb acaras. Do you know about the viability of either of those shrimp in this tank setup?

I thinking the one pair to prevent fighting between the two pairs. EB acara are a pain to sex. Tho I think it would possible to do a harem. A single male with like 3 females. Give plenty of hides and caves. The extra females could actually help the main pairs bond with a little competition.

I would pick a tall body tetra like Bleeding hearts or Black skirts etc. The smaller ones may turn into snacks when the EB mature.

The catfish, Cory's and pleco are more for fry control.

I had HRP's in a simular set up in a 55 for a year. Over that time only three fry made it to adults out of a dozen spawns.

If you wanted to you could always get another tank or two and once you see pairs put them in there. Once you see the female lay the eggs then you can separate them by gender and have all 1 gender.

Just a thought.

Would congo tetras work then instead of neons? I'll have to decide between the harem and one pair, but I'd say I'll probably go for one pair if thats the safer way to go. So right now I have some pearls, 2 or 4 eb acaras depending, some corys and possibly some congo tetras. Do you know if cherry shrimp would work with this combination of fish or no?

I would say no, the catfish and EB would make them spendy little snacks.

The best way to get a pairing is to get 6 individuals all the same size around inch or so. Let them grow out and naturally pair up. Forced pairing rarely works and often ends in a death. The extras you move to another tank or sell/give away. Wait till you have a firm pairing before you separate. Weak pairings could even break.

Congo's would work, but are not biotope correct as they are from Africa not South America.

I had 5 EBAs together with 1 pair in the group. The only real aggression was when they were breeding but it wasn't too out of control. I had them with a school of Colombian tetras and red head geos. It was a peaceful tank overall. I wouldn't even consider the shrimp, as others have said they will get munched very quickly.
A nicely scraped tank with a full grown pair of EBAs and 1 big school of a suitable tetra would look amazing if done well.
