G'day

Got a group of 6x juvenile A. crassipinnis a month ago. They were marketed in Australia as Wildcaught Bumblebee Oscars 'Araguala Brazil'. From what I have seen online, it seems these have been for sale globally over the last couple of months.

Whether they are wildcaught or not is debatable (I don't really care). However some of my own notes have been that their behavior is quite obviously different to what you see in aquarium strains. They group together when threatened, and even stay fairly close by when not threatened even as they have gotten a little larger (currently 5-6"). They also appear to be bit more aggressive than your average aquarium strain Oscar.

Everything I have read online states that they are a smaller species of Oscar. Their growth rate to date has been nothing short of phenomenal. The two pics were taken exactly 1 month and 1 day apart. The growth and change in appearance is very obvious.

I bought some albino's at almost the exactly same time to grow out (growing out in a different tank) and they've outgrown the albinos considerably over the same time.

Beautiful bumblebees I have 6 but an F 1 they are straight liner mark too but not too straight like the wild caught 1inch to 1.3inches I assume they are so tiny. Hopefully they will turn more beautiful when they grow like yours.

I still have the 6 bumblebees.

The largest which I assume is male is now in excess of 30cm/12". The rest of the fish are in the 9-10" range.

I will get some updated pics and revive this thread in the next few days.

I thought they were meant to be smaller than the normal Oscar?
How did you find these down here in Australia? Most shops here are only stocked with very basic fish as they say no one wants anything too expensive or rare due to the rising cost of living.

Yes, they are meant to stay smaller. This has not been my experience. Mine have outgrown some aquarium strain albinos that I got at the same time.

Here are my new buddies tag as F1 bumblebees, but I still need some feedback from you fishmates to verify my new oscars if they are really bumblebees. I'm not an expert but I assume that they are Crassipinnis and not a tiger because tiger oscars have different line on their bodies.

Based on my research:
F0 means Wild caught
F1 means babies of F0
F2 means babies of F1
...

It's hard to tell from that video - better off getting a decent still image.

The originals that came in Australia about 12 months ago and appeared globally were apparently wildcaught. Yours have appeared at an odd time in Australia as the ones from 12 months ago wouldn't be reproducing yet and I am unware of anymore being imported.
