Algae on a the glass of a heavy planted tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
what type of algae? GSA/green spot algae? this stuff is pretty tough. I use a razor blade on glass tanks and a credit card on acrylic (or glass) tanks. Comes right off ;)

I use a blade and scrape it. Glass doesn't scrape that easily. What do you think is causeing the algae? That's the answer I'd be looking for....

Yup, a healthy tank shouldn't have algae. You can scrape it off, but by not addressing the underlying issue, it will come right back.

The tank is new and it is a brown algae which seems to be normal for new tanks. I have in hand the algae magnet scraper like mag float. Do you think this is good?

Exactly. For me it was a combination of excess nutrients/excessive lighting. I've cut back my lighting (almost in half) and have switched the livestock ( in the planted tank ) to less messy eaters ( had my Fahaka puffer in it before ). I've also added water lettuce to help take away some of the excess nutrients. The back glass that is against the wall was covered in algae, but it has sinced desappeared. :headbang2

Yeah it should go away in a few weeks. A magnet cleaner works good. To make it even better, I add a piece of tissue/towel/napkin on the inside of the cleaner in between the glass. It leaves the glass much cleaner that way.

Diatom algae I would guess..... It will probably go away on it's own, but scraping it won't hurt anything. It'll be back tomorrow.

Same here, I had bad GSA for about 2-3 weeks on my 57g. Raised my fixture a few inches and cut the light period by 2hrs and it never returned. No more PIA glass scraping :D
