(aka: Red Fin Compressiceps)

We started out with 7 of them @ 2" or so last October. We were planning on getting at least a single breeding pair (if we were lucky...they were far to small to vent) and the rest, would be put into our large display tank once they got bigger/old enough to deal with the bigger fishes in said tank.
So far, we've been growing them out in our 36 gallon grow out tank ever since. In the first few months, we lost two of them.....it happens.

Of the remaining 5, I could clearly see that one was a female, due to her being considerably smaller than the other 4. I had already picked out the best looking male from the remaining group, but wanted to see which fish would pair off with the female first.

Last weekend was our monthly Aquarium Society meeting and auction, as such, we removed some of the other species of fry/grow outs from the tank and auctioned them off, which opened up the tank a lot more, plus we re-arranged the decorations etc.

Anyway, all was going well (or so I thought) until I came home yesterday. All the other fish in the tank were perfectly fine, but I could only see two comps....one was female, and the other was a male....the male I had picked out as being the best (best colour, best attitude....etc) and the rest were out of sight.

Once my wife got home (we're partners in this...so if I did this before she got home.....hell to pay!! lol), we started intensively looking around, lifting decorations, etc. We found the other males. Two were at opposite ends of the tank from each other, and the 3rd was in the middle under a rock! All DOA.

I suspect:

The male that I like became the most dominant, and killed off all the other males, securing his female.

Anyway, so long as it's not the female killing off all the males....I'll be happy! We now have what we suspect will be our breeding pair (would have prefered a trio, but I guess we didn't have many females in the origional group...maybe they were the first few casualties...dunno) and I don't have to worry about what to do with the other males....(they were kinda ugly, their mouths were "stuck" open anyway, so I couldn't really sell them to anyone)

Anyway....just wanted to share! :)

Thanks for looking!

Nice read.

Interesting read. I currently have 3 white calvus that are very young and I'm growing out. I'm not looking to get a pair but I'm guessing that eventually i will have to break them up to prevent them from killing each other.

The part that shocked me the most was that I didn't suspect the comps at all....I figured they had at least another 6-9 months before any aggression issues started popping up....but with only one female in the tank, I guess that explains it.

Last night was tank maintenance night, so tonight should be a better night for taking some pictures and hopefully post them! If not tonight, than tomorrow for sure.

Well, it appears the female is AWOL....we suspect the lone remaining male probably did her in after he was finished with the other males.

Sad.

I was paying attention, and it didn't appear that he was showing any aggression towards the female at all. Now she's "gone" without a trace...or a carcass!

...that's why I haven't posted any pics...now I'm at the point where I'm considering selling this guy off and buying a larger pair or trio the next time some decent sized ones come in to the ranch.

If anyone still wants some pics of the now named "jack-***", (really...what's the point now?) let me know before he gets pissed off at his reflection or something and decides his own time is up! lol

The pics are from last night....

He's the only comp left...roughly 2" or so in length.

Enjoy!

P.S. apologies for not scraping the algae off the glass BEFORE taking pictures and posting them!

Nice fish I have 7 gold heads in one of my 55gal. tanks with a pair of Jul. T Bemba and two pairs of Brevis and two extra males. the gold heads are all 2" and under one had the mouth stuck open so I caught it pressed his upper lip back in and put him in a plastic breeder for a week so I could keep an eye on him and it stayed in. They are cool fish but I'm not sure I have the patients to grow them out Fastest growers ever LOL.

I could have some very exiting Mbuna in the 55 instead.
