I have what I believe is a mid evil, sold to me at my LFS as a red devil, just wondering if the true origin could be determined in their eye color? I know trimacs have red eyes, though it would be a interesing topic to discuss, sry for the poor pics but he's a spark plug and would not keep still, he's close to 9 months around 6"

These fish can vary so much I don’t think that their eye color can be used as a way to identify them with any certainty.

Unless someone knows better.

I figured as much, my amph has a white orange color mix to him, either way, He's a keeper I've had many years in the hobby & their personality & traits make them one of the most desirable cichlids by far

I don't believe you will ever be able to determine origin by any visual means.
Here are some photos of a few Amphilophines
A. amarillo

A flaveolus

A lyonsi

A trimaculatus

As others have stated, eye color has no bearing on species in this genus.
