Hello,

I am interested to hear about angelfish species' age. I bought old Leopoldi angelfish, the previous owner told me that their estimated age was eight by then. That was two years ago... They look really old but still hang around.

What is the usual age for angelfish in captivity?

I would say 8 - 12 years should be normal. But with good genes and good conditions more should be possible. I saw 12 year old P. scalare that didn't look like they will die within a few months.

I have had P. scalare live for 10 years in my aquaria.
Regarding your new (long-lived) P. leopoldii = dumerillii - Would you post pictures, please?
My single specimen of long-nosed angelfish (photos below) is probably ~ 5 years old (but it was live collected so it is impossible to know).
Thanks!

Thank you for your answers! The previous owner told me they are wild collected, that explains them being afraid of my camera all the time... When I go to see them, no problem, but when I take my camera with me... I will try to take photos while feeding, that might do the trick.

Beautiful Long-Nosed Angels!! And your aquarium set-up looks great too.
Thanks for posting the images. They look gorgeous, with lots of red on their fins. At least one looks larger and much more mature than mine.
So you have a group of 2-3 long-nosed with a group of altum? (I see one altum in your picture).
Very cool, lucky you!
One more image of my poor single, lonely one...

Thank you for the compliment FJB! I have tried to create natural looking decoration for fish to feel more at ease. There are three leopoldi and three Altums, leopoldi are so hard to find here that I decided to get young Altums instead. I might buy more as leopoldi leave this world. Altums are not so common either but I visit yearly one shop where I have found them. In my opinion leopoldi are much more calmer than Altums, Altums have become to spawning age this year and are sparring with each other from time to time, nothing serious though. Or maybe it's the age making other calm and other active.

Hum. My angels are only 2 years old but if you remind me in 10 years i'll check if they are still alive ;) I suspect their biggest threat is killing each other.

Oh yea - a picture of their home - they are currently in a 120 but will be moved to an upgraded 450 in about 13 months. The gold and black ones in front are actually babies from the platinum and black one on the far left (in the shadows). mom and dad more or less accepted the babies but once the babies grew up they tried to to 'overthrow' dad. I had to remove a few (had 13 down to 8) to get the dynamics right so everyone mostly gets along without too much brutalization.
