Check out Charlie and the FIsh Tank factory in the vendor section. He has ceramic rings at the fraction of the price.

Yeah I bought some ceramic rings from him before. They're the generic kind but for the price was pretty good. Do you think there's much of a difference between the generic bio rings and the fluval biomax?

Probably.

But, the question is if you even have enough bacteria growing based on your bioload for it to make a difference. A bacteria colony will max out depending on its food source, it doesn't just get bigger the more and more bio media you add. So, in that sense, unless you are pressed for space or something, generic is probably ok.

Eheim pro has the most surface area I think... there is also seachem matrix, and seachem makes one for ponds called pond matrix you can buy in bulk for cheap. Designed for ponds but can be used in anything.

Looks as if the BioMax has much more surface area then Matrix.:WHOA:

Eheim EHFISUBSTRAT with over 450 m2 per liter = 4842 sq. ft. of surface area per liter. Link a.

Seachem Matrix™ provides over 160,000 cm2 per liter = 170 sq. ft. of surface area per liter. Link b.

Hagan Biomax each ceramic ring contains at least 100 square feet of surface area x approx 66 rings per liter = 6600 sq. ft. of surface area per liter. Link c. Each 17.63 oz box contains approximately 100 ceramic cylinders - perfect for most mid-sized (approximately 1-1/2 L) media baskets. link d.

170 sq ft ????? try 5250 sq ft

Matrix is hollow and has a additional 9640 sq ft per liter of internal surface area.

Fluval bioMax is actaully JinHaisun sintered glass rings and they run about 1460 Sq ft per liter.

All these products are essentially the same its the shape of the media that makes the most difference. Sintered glass @ 1900c creates about 3500-4000 pores per sq 0.1 mm

The advantage of biomax and substratpro over matrix is in the more even flow rates due to the shape of the media. Pond Matrix is round and evens up this quite a bit.

To give you a idea on these sintered glass medias ... one single ball of SubstratPro has the surface area of 31 standard plastic bioballs.

generic biomax is made of plastic with just dents and chips on the surface to make it look porous. the real deal is ceramic and is porous all the way through with much more surface area.

"Real" Biomax is not pressure cooked ceramic like Efmech or Fluval Mech or many of the ceramic rings you see for sale. Biomax is sintered glass like all the other premium biomedias but in the ring/noodle shape.
