Any other ancient fish recommendations other than arowanas, gars, bichirs, knife fish and lungfish?

There's the bowfins, African butterfly fish and elephant nose fish. Sturgeons and paddlefish too, but as coldwater fish that get well over a meter they aren't really suitable for most people.

If you want unique fish with similar looks, maybe something like fossil cat, eel cat (do be reminded that they're banned in the US since they're in the walking catfish family), banjo cat, hingemouth, leaf fish, larger freshwater gobies, hairy puffers or swamp eels?

I agree with all said above. Perhaps some Spiny Eels? Wolf Fish, but they’re aggressive. Ropefish, Plecos, Hoplos, those are all somewhat ancient or primitive. Don’t get one unless you have a large tank, but Arapaima. Bony tongues. Tarpon, but same goes for Arapaima is some cases. Lampreys, but I’m not sure how you’d keep one, as most are illegal and some are seasonal species, like some killies. Ripsaws, Irwini, Rock Bacu, Raphael Catfish. Those are just a few that came to mind.

The deep south
+1 for bowfin… males dont get very big and they have all the pattern. Very underrated fish to catch and keep
