Appropriate Tank Size for an Arowana?

I hear so many different things, as far as minimum tank size.. I would say 95% of the conjectures are wrong. I would say 95% of the people who own Aros won't properly house them in their lifetime.

I am not here to preach, or share my displeased opinion of these inappropriate fish..

But Honestly, What do you think is the appropriate tank size for any species of Arowana?

If you own an Arowana, after answering that question, ask yourself if you will be able to accomodate it's needs. Do you plan on upgrading? Do you already have a tank big enough? Going to try to give it away to a LFS or Aquarium?

I am just curious if how many people actually know the appropriate tank size and/or if they plan on doing anything about it?

this question is so far shot dude. i myself started off not beign able to house them properly. 150gal tank 20" wide. itty bitty imo. but to others that would be huge and think that its big enough when its not. i myself have found that upgrading was more of a need then want so i did, now my aros thrive in a 400gal tank with no means to upgrade again.

what do i think is the minimum? 240gal 8x2x2 but of course others will say otherwise.

what do i recommend if u decide to keep it to adult hood? something 3ft wide, ur choice of height, and somewhere between 7-8 ft long.

will others think 4x2x2 is plenty? yeah because asians do it

will u think 8x2x2 is to small? yeah because aros do get big

will u think 400 is enough? maybe not, but to some, 400 is better then bein back at the lfs in a 30gal til someone decides to try there hands at it and killing it

i'm going to get a silver and keep it in a 100 gal as long as i can, then i will probally trade or sell it, but if it gets to big for my tank it will definately be to big for my lfs 30-60 gal tanks!

i mean believe it or not we are talking about fish!!! not babies or humans or cats and dogs, when it all boils down to it they are fish!!!!
 
the bare minimum I would say is 3ft deep but if the aro hits 3ft then your tank is too small the ideal tank would be 8x6x3 but to have the perfect tank I would say a 12ft diameter or bigger this is just my opion though but if you think anything under 2' is ok you need to consider another fish just my 2cents
 
The tank requirements of an aro are the main reason I do not have one. I know I cannot now or in the near future provide what I feel is ideal for the life of this pet. My opinion of the 3 foot fish in a 4 foot tank is why not to lock yourself in a closet for a day and see if you feel its big enough.

While attempting to keep a fish in captivity you seldom replicate there natural habitat. With ANY species of arowana I believe the minimum tank size should be the following.

The tank lenght should be at least 3x the length of the aro.

The tank witdth/depth needs to be at least equal to the length of the aro.

I also think that the hight of the tank should be equal to the length of the aro, but you could go with a little less on this one.

For me and my 2 growing aros my goal is to have a 300 gallon tank by the end of the summer, this will house them for I'm hoping a few years. Once my silver gets near the 30" in length I will need to provide a larger tank for him. I am hoping to do a 10' x 4' x 3' plywood type tank in my basement.
