I have a 55 gallon aqueon need to drill for a gator tank first time was a failure on a older tank I have a brand new one scared to drill tried all tricks and don't know if it's tempered

Normally on off the shelf 55g only the bottom panel is tempered. All the vertical panels should be fine to drill unless you see a tag on the bottom frame that says otherwise. You can't miss the tag. They are yellow or orange. Patience is key when drilling. Had my share of blowing panels out on the 10g test tanks I had. Use clay to make a circle a few inches in diameter bigger than the whole you are drilling. Place it centered around the whole you are drilling and fill it with water. Make sure the tank is stable. Slow steady pressure or even no pressure applied at all. Let the weight of the drill do the work for you and just keep the drill from wobbling around. It will feel like a lifetime your first handful of times you drill. Deep breaths. Walk away if you need to. Be especially patient when you know you're about done with the hole. Applying excessive pressure at the end can make the hole very jagged or "pull" some of the last millimeters of glass off with the bottom of the disc. Good luck!
