Im thinking of settimg up a tank for tree frogs but hate taking care of crickets.

Can are canned insects nutritious enough to be a staple?

I wouldn't just use that as a diet. If you can't stand live crickets then you probably should reconsider keeping an insectivorous animal like tree frogs. Just a thought

Why wouldnt you? Im looking for specifics on why theyre no good.

I just dont like the extra chore of feeding, cleaning, etc... for live insects but i am willing to do it if necessary.

Im simply looking into possible alternatives.

i doubt they would eat a dead cricket... i would go with dubia roaches

Canned insects often lack a lot of nutritional value. Also they may have "enhancements" that really aren't good for critters. Also frogs don't normally take to dead bugs. My bullfrog and pacific tree frogs only ate live and only when it was moving lots. I will second the idea for dubias I clean my dubia tub 2x a week and that only consists of pulling out the paper towel with the food on it and replacing it. My dubias produce around 30 babies a month and I only have 8 females:P a lot of this also depends on what type of tree frogs you are wanting. Red eyes and monkey frogs probably won't take bigger dubias, where dumpys or Cubans and other thicker tree frogs would probably love some bulkier dubias.

Virtually worthless nutritiously. Go for roaches, they're a far better option.

I only had one frog that ever took dead food, and I raised him from a tadpole. don't know what kind it was. but even he would only eat something that he "perceived" to have moved.

Thanks for the responses.

I figured i could entice a feeding response by feeding live with tongs then switch to dead crickets IF they were a nutritionally viable option.

I will look into a dubia colony. I hear they dont smell bad like crickets do.
