I am wanting to add a tile bottom to my tank. I really like marble but I heard somewhere that they were not safe to use. Is this true or are marble and granite both safe to use?

i think the natural stuff is ok. however the ones from china are not natural color so i wouldn't use those.

i have also heard that marble is not safe. i think it was fishdog that said something about it. maybe he will add in when he sees this thread.

Bump for Fishdog's input, as I was eyeballing Marble tile the other day as well..... Don't see any reason you couldn't use it..... But I'm all ears!

i have been told in the past not to use granite rocks in tanks, i dont remember why, but i remember it wasnt good.

If in doubt then first add vinegar to the raw stone, if it fizzes then it will cause issues.

Then soak some in a big bucket and keep testing the ph and hardness to see if it changes.

I know granite is safe as that is what Mike (Fishdog) used in one of his setups, Not sure on the
Marble, but I would not see why it wouldn't be safe beings its a natural mineral. Slate is another
natural mineral which is safe and comes in a multitude of colors and patterns.

good info toby.

i also hope that it was fishdog that said something now and that i just didnt put him on the spot lol. it might have just been the ph thing but whatever it was it kept me away from it.

i was looking to add black tiles or slate to the bottom of my tank but it is full with water and fish would it be possible to do and how would you secure them would you grout or use some sealent on the edges as wouldnt the fish waste sit in the joins?
