i was about to go run out and get some pantyhose for my filter intake(feeder guppy babies!), but thought I'd google it just to make sure it was safe. I ran across multiple threads saying they were safe, and others saying they weren't. Anyone actually use pantyhose to stop small fish from getting sucked into the filter, or have a better way that doesn't involve more than 5 bucks? Preferably not look bad as well, but I'm not picky.

pantyhose is safe to use. used it to bag carbon before when i ran out of filter socks... lol

I'd be sure to attach it very securely though if its on a HOB...That could cause a problem if it got sucked in through one of the openings and jammed the impeller.

Just sayin. :)

It all depends on who the prior owner was!

Great minds think alike

Seems like pantyhose wouldnt help if a guppy fry was swimming past, it doesnt really cut down on suction much. i think you would be better off putting a sponge on the intake, plus you get bonus filteration

i second this with experience if your filter is strong enough it really wont matter, i have killed fry with pantyhose prefilters, you're better off getting a 3x3x3 foam block and shaping it into a cylinder and then carving a hole that your filter intake barely fits about an inch down, works great and you just clean the foam thoroughly every 2 weeks or switch out while you bleach every 3 weeks is better so your filter is only off while switching.

I'm using a marineland c220. Think this would be too strong for the pantyhose idea? If the pantyhose is covering the intake, would the guppies just die from the water suction, or do they actually get sucked into the intake with the pantyhose?
