Hi all,

So I've had this idea going round my head for the past month and I've finally decided to make a thread on it, as I just can't come to a decisive conclusion.

Here's a bit of back story-

Recently I went to Thailand on a fish tour/expedition, visiting fish farms, shops and the Chatuchak fish market. I absolutely fell in love with the range of Asian arowana and also the albino stingrays I came across. And ever since, I haven't been able to get the idea of an Asian arowana community tank out of my head. Now I've been researching most evenings and I'm still on the fence, so decide to create a thread for some personalised input. From my research, if you want to create an Asian arowana community tank, you'll need A, a big tank and B at least 5 Asian arowana. Immediate problems/issues are, if this goes wrong I'll end up with A, and expensive loss and B, a group of injured/ sick fish

Currently (Attached) I have an 8x3x2.5 foot aquarium (420 gallon), housing my SHB Malaysian Gold arowana, 4 stingrays (One albino pearl) , Stormii catfish, IT datnoid and 3 Hampala barbs. Now my plan is to move on the 3 Hampala barbs and 3 of the four stingrays (Not the albino). Then purchase another 2 Albino pearl rays (males) and then either Asian arowana or a group of more datnoids.

So heres my question. Am I being totally ridiculous in thinking this size aquarium will be suitable for 5 Asian arowana? and have no chance at keeping them all alive? I saw many tanks in Thailand with more arowana in MUCH smaller tanks than mine (Not saying this is correct/ethical). Or should I try and give this a go? if this isn't feasible my plan B is to add another 5 datnoids and create a nice group (I have been researching the pros and cons to this too).

If the arowana community goes ahead, the final stocking would be 5x Asian arowana, 3x male albino pearl stingrays, 1x datnoid and 1x Stormii catfish. Although I'd be happy to rehome the stormii and datnoid if/where necessary. And I'm fully aware the aquascape would have to be removed somewhere down the line.

All advice and input is welcome. I made this thread to give me a more informed decision before making any purchases. I really struggled to find many people that have done this before and documented it, maybe its just not possible?

thank you

I have no experience with asian aros, only with silver ones. I know a member who has been keeping aros for several years, so i will tag him and hopefully he may be able to help you.
Trouser Cough Trouser Cough

EDIT:
This member has also be keeping asian and silver aros for years

Thank you, appreciate it, yes I only plan to keep Asians (smaller) and also not any of the reds or super reds as these supposedly get bigger.

RD. RD. Didn’t your friend have a big Asian community where you posted a picture and the smallest one pictured was around 30”?

Over 13,000 posts but you still can readily find a single one when brought up, you’re incredible rd.

Unfortunately, yes, ridiculous.

I saw many tanks in Thailand with more arowana in MUCH smaller tanks than mine

They are just in there till they are sold.

Oh yes. I have kept multiple dats with a single aro. Great combination.

Hope you enjoyed Thailand.

Thank you for all the advice! Back to the drawing board. I’m definitely going to move on my larger black diamond stingray and go down to three rays. It’s just then wether I move on the hampala barbs for a group of Datnoids, or maybe try a few other oddballs. My continued research this evening has concluded that the risks don’t outweigh the rewards of an Asian arowana community tank. Thank you
