I recently picked up some banjo catfish and am was wondering if Asian stone catfish were to small to go with them? From what I have read the banjo catfish tend to get around 4”-5” and the stone catfish gets around 1.5”. If I added the stone catfish full grown do you suppose there would be any problems?

The first two are showing two out of the three lighting levels I use on the this tank for them. The third one uses no light except the light from a lamp near by and is too dark for the camera to make out clearly.

Size difference between the smallest and one of the biggest.
The tank is a 20 high bare bottom with a whisper filter and a sponge filter. There are 9 banjo catfish in the tank. They are in there for quarantine, monitoring, also so they can get a bit bigger. For the record the big one is the size of my pinkie which is 2.25 inches in length.
Eventually they’re going in a 40 breeder.

If by Asian stone catfish you mean Akysis, then I would suggest these to be a little to small and would be at risk. Whilst banjos are not hunters and are quite a lazy catfish, I have had mine quite a number of years and have never seen them eat, but they can be a more opportunistic feeder, so if the stone cats came across a half burried banjo there would be no sure ending.
I have kept banjos with forties fine. And I have kept Akysis, but never all together.
As an extra, banjos can bury in gravel but sand would be ideal.
if you hope to breed them, the little I have found indicated that they spawned on the glass where a sprayer return fed back. However another report on here suggested a different setup.
you will easily tell the larger father females from the skinny smaller males as they grow.

I think I found the catfish you’re talking about and I believe they are different ones. The one I’m talking about is this one.
I should have used the scientific name to avoid any confusion.
Anyway, if I found the catfish you’re thinking of them they grow to similar sizes and I’m assuming the one I’m meaning is not safe either.

Could you tell me the full name of these “forties”?

I am planning on putting sand in for them but only once they have grown some more so I can make sure they’re eating good enough on their own.

I appreciate the tip about breeding them as it is in the plans, thank you.

I saw them swimming about and got a video of it. This is about their normal activity level when the only light source is a lamp about 6 feet away.

Sorry, predictive text. Not "forties", meant various types of corries, or rather corydoras catfish.
And no, I have kept anchor cats too and although great catfish in their own right, they would not be safe with your banjos.

Hmm, that is a real shame as these anchor catfish and banjo catfish both have the same “look” and I was hoping they would be safe together. I may end up making a banjo catfish and African butterfly fish tank and keep the water level down a bit so it’s a tank that you view them from the top.
