I purchased two Astyanax aenues from Jeff Rapps and was won over by these greedy little whirlwinds from the first day I got them. They are insanely active little predators who have literally eaten anything I have offered: flakes, pellets, sinking pellets, bloodworms, shrimp, chopped worms and mussels, etc. I was blown away by their abilities as predators when I watched one who is about three inches snatch and completely chomp down a feeder minnow of about two inches itself. These guys don't have huge mouths so it was that much more impressive. I was wondering what other hobbyists' experiences have been with these guys and if others have enjoyed them as much as I have so far? Thanks for any feedback!

Sounds like a nice but no experience with them. I do have some alestes tetra that look just like them.

Nice! All astyanax sp. are amazing. They are very bold and fast. I have two spots that range from 4-6". They even pick on and nip my larger CA cichlids like my 9" p. loisellie. They also have eaten their share of HRP fry and 1"+ sized. IMO they are like having a smaller brycon sp. I also hand feed them shrimp and blood worm cubes. How big are yours and do you have any pics?

Here are my two spot astyanax.

They never stop cruising. Totally agree with the mini-brycons comparisons. I have a 9 inch red tail brycon and the aenues behave very similarly. They have a get out of my way attitude and never stop eating. Would love to get my hands on a variety of other astyanax species to mix in with these guys and their tank mates.

Nice! How many do you have? I have been very curious how they will work w/ other sp. Mine beat on each other now but maybe it would help. I would love to have Mexican tetras, but have never been able to find them for sale.
Here is a pic you can see the red. They are so hard to get pics!

I have two at the moment. They are occasionally snappy with each other and others however they are too spastic it seems to concentrate any amount of effort for a sustained period of time to really do damage. They are the whirlwind hogs of the tank. Their constant motion however seems to reassure some of the skittish fish in the tank.
