Ah are you talking about the Tandanus tandanus what a great Aussie native and a must have for any Australian native tank set up.

You want a big set up they grow in an aquarium to be over 50cm. you want the Ph to be as close to 7 as possible, and as they are scale less fish, you want to make sure the water is as clean as possible to avoid ICH, bacteria and fungal infections. The temperature is not a big issue, and most people look at what else is in the tank to set the temperature. As they are found all up and down the east coast of Australia, but seam to thrive in Queensland I would say a temperature around 24 would be the best.
They are bottom feeders, and because of their “whiskers”, you don’t want anything to sharp in the tank, and you want a bit of cover for them, and not to much light. Sinking pellets and prawns seam to be the go, with some vegetables.
They are pretty easy going in the tank, and can be mixed with a lot of other fish, and I would be more worried about the other fish giving it a hard time. however if a fish did go for it, it does have spines on its back, and could do some damage to the fish.
If I was going to keep them, a 8x2x2 would be perfect. As you could have a mix of other Australian natives in the tank as well,
When they are small they may school but they are not a schooling fish when mature so be carful how many you get. In a 8x2x2 I would think 3…
People have told me it is easy to sex catfish, but I don’t own any and have never done it, so I don’t want to give you any wrong information.

I have a 12 inch Tandanus Tandanus. Beautiful nature, I had a ghost knife that was too shy to come out to feed, the Tandanus used to drop pellets in front of him to eat. Bizarre. But there is video evidence to prove. :D

I'd certainly recommend them.

no no please listen to me. I have two of these fish and as much as I love my babies they kill every single fish I have ever put in a tank with them. they are not meant for community tanks and are aggressive fish. They get huge, about 80cm long and are very active so you'll need about a minimum 130 litre tank for them. they eat sinking good but also love bloodworms. I keep my temp at about 26-28C. you can not tell the sex just by looking you have to flip them over which is very hard since they have venomous barbs (not deadly but will make your hand throb for awhile). They are nocturnal so you won't see them much in the day as they will mainly be hiding but if you put that aside they are beautiful fish and I love mine with all my heart. would definitely take these things into consideration though especially since it is a big tank that can only really have one species in it. Some people say that you can put larger fish with them but look heres the thing. they will most likely kill them and it is just a waste of time, money and if you really care about fish, its a waste of a life since you'll just be sending a fish to its death bed. still an absolutely beautiful fish tho!! just remember these thing :)
