Hi
I have been offered for sale some spotted gar babies (4 inches).
I like the idea of buying them as babies as more easily available and can get a bigger group for much less $$$.
In my experience, some species of fish, it is impossible to tell when they are babies a) how good quality they are and b)whether they will grow big/healthy. i.e. the babies never end up looking like the full sized adults that cost a lot more $$$.
They have black stripes currently. My research tells me they should shoot up to 12 inches and turn spotty quite quickly (maybe within 6 months) and then the growth rate will slow considerably.
They will be going in a 7ft by 4ft 400+ Gallon tank, which has an auto water change system, meaning 30% daily water changes (or more accurately 5% every 4 hours so the fish don’t even notice it taking place) so conditions for them to grow will be optimum.
In peoples experience – do baby spotted gars usually all grow to be decent sized, healthy and good looking adult specimens? Or will they likely be disappointing?
Pictures of ‘before’ and ‘after’ would be really appreciated as to what yours looked like as babies and how they developed.
Also how many times a day feeding and of what? I’m thinking twice a day as babies to try and help them grow?
Thanks.
