No clue if this is how the hump on the head starts but it doesn't look right. Wanna see if it's a parasite or anything like that. Hopefully he's just getting a sweet hump. Sorry about the horrible pics

I also thought the OPs balzani appeared to be female, but if there are no other balzani in the tank, this may effect formation of a hump. I also give mine a cool down, and believe this may also have something to do with hump formation.
The 2 females in the pic below, are same age as the male they are with.

Duanes - your balzanii look fantastic! I bought some 0.75" Uruguay "yellow race" balzanii through Aquabid a while back but now that they're 2-3" they still resemble the standard silver form. I give them a cool down, but only to the mid 60s. That might be a factor, although my G. gymnogenys have great colors under the same conditions. I was hoping my balzanii would look like yours. That male is freakishly awesome!

My balzani cool down was basically 60sF in an unheated tank, my other Uruguayans were in a colder basement room on the floor (low 50s/high 40s).
Diet is very low protein/high spirulina HBH super soft pellet, and a koi high vitamin/color food, and occasionally HBH shrimp pellets.
Might also be light bulbs, I find the color type of bulb has a lot to do with color of fish, especially in pics.
Here is a shot with warm white fluorescent bulbs.

Here with white, red, and blue DIY LEDs

Subtle difference, but I think the colors in the 2nd are a bit more vibrant.
