Dacula, Ga
so i just recently purchased 2 of these based apon what the tag at petsmart said and come to find out that the tag was incorrect. they are in a 20g tank right now with goraumies right now but will be moved to a larger tank here soon. im looking into getting a 75g tank (should be picking it up some time this weekend actually) and have a few questions for yall about that species.....

  • are they aggressive to one another or will the pair do fine together?

  • how aggressive are they to other speicies? i ask this b/c they kinda ate one of my cory cats last night and it seemed kinda odd to.

  • what is an ideal set up for them?

  • what is some general info on them? i cant seem to find any set info on them, everything i have read seems to contradict one another so far.

They get about 12 inches. Can get aggressive with anything in the tank when they hit the 6-8 inch range. Usually attack by torpedoing or tail slapping. Will eat almost anything but like a lot of veggies. Need enough room to swim fast and keep a tight lid as they are jumpers. Very skittish.

i havnt noticed them being skittish, they seem to come to the side of the tank when im near it.

is there any preferred tank mates for them?

Larger more aggressive fish. I've had mine with large SA/CA cichlids, silver dollars, pacu, bichirs and has been fine once he got past the hostile stage.

i just got home from work and they killed my last cory cat today.... so why do they go after the cories instead of the other fish that are in the tank?

They tend to attack slow moving and stationary fish. Also, cories like the bottom just like the banded leporinus. Most are nasty and you have some nasty ones from what you have said. Good tankmates for yours would be fast swimming mid-range fish like bala sharks, silver dollars, giant danios, etc. Basically fish that grow to a decent size, preferably mid/top level dwellers and can outswim it.

One of the people above has a bichir with his. I was too afraid to try that mix since bichirs are bottom dwellers and not active. (However, I will say that a lot of fish that tend to be aggressive seem to leave bichirs alone for some reason.) I'm still afraid to try it as I love bichirs too much.
