So I'm thinking about installing an outside enclosure for my beardie.

I can install a heat lamp to raise the basking area temps as high as I need it to be, but my research says the cool side needs to be around the mids 70s minimum.

The actual climate is cooler. The temperature outside is pretty much consistent day or night, at around 70f at its highest at noon and 45f at its lowest at night, but usually it stays around the mid 50s.

Can I have a cool side in the 50s and assume they can self-regulate body temps with the heat lamp, or is that just way too cold?

A heat mat won't work for my layout. (I also can't find any.)

If they get too cold, their metabolism slows down enough that they won't always move to a warmer spot, and stay in the cold spot until it heats up.

I agree, bring him in when it gets too cold.
