Hey Everybody,

Well Im very enthused in animals, you can see me posting in the fishy areas of the forum and the reptiles of coarse. Well thier is a reptile expo coming up as it does every 3 -4 months in New York ( www.reptileexpo.com ) . I had a baby savannah monitor a few years ago who I obtained on accident as it was in a sack with a ball python, the monitor lived and lived with me for a year which then it was about 18 inches...which then I brought him to a zoo. I had a bearded dragon who hated me and they seem boring in my opinion and I had skinks/leopard geckos. Well now I want to take on something big like a Water, Nile or Croc Monitor? Lol guess not :nilly:

Question:

How are the Ackie Monitors if anyone has them. I've been told they are the best of the best in personality (Still I bet it coudn't beat my old sav who I miss dearly). They get to a nice handleable size. Any thoughts or tips? I've researched online a bit but rather have actual people with first hand experience guide me.

Thanks

Or other monitor, reptile of similar size and personality? I'm looken at the prices of ackies and realize that their a pretty penny...but still will keep them in mind.

Most large monitors are illegal in NY including the ones you suggested. If Ackies are too expensive go for Timors. Much cheaper and they get around the same size. Also I suggest going to the Hudson Valley Reptile Expo(their website is herpnerds.com) if it's not too far, it's a great show! Timors are arboreal so they need some height and length. If you liked a sav so much why not get another one? The cage requirement for a timor is not too far from a sav.

Yeah lol I know about the monitors that are illegal. I was just joken around with me getting such a large monitor. Savs are great but I was trying to look for a nice handleble reptile that can live in a small cage...by small I mean a 4feet by 2 feet by 2feet enclosure.

I'll check the site now

I think that may be a bit too small for ackies too. If not I may have to get some ackies(I have an empty 4x2x2)

Lol, Im pretty sure it's a good size for one ackie especially if you like me who will probably keep him out for a few hours every day.

Im still pissed of how much ackies are $250 and up! I would like to purchase a reptile under $100... maybe a blue tongue skink...gotta go research...I'll compile a list of reptiles in consideration

I have 2 female yellow Ackies and I love them. Yes, they are expensive but they are well worth the price. They are a great starter monitor and have similar temperature requirements to Bearded Dragons.

EDIT: Can anyone give an average price for them? Good breeder, place to buy? Also what the difference between Yellows and reds besides size and price? Thanks lol.. P.S sorry for kinda hijacking the thread with this I'm sure it will help you too.

Check on FaunaClassifieds and Kingsnake.com to see if anyone has any available. As for those 2 subspecies mentioned.....the difference mainly has to do with their size, coloring and where they originate from in the wild. Reds are usually more expensive but at the moment it seems like there are more of them available and the yellows are the hard ones to find.

Edit: here's someone selling Reds and Yellows.
