columbus, mi
Getting ready to set up a tank for a mbu puffer and was wondering what the best substrate would be for one.I was thinking about mixing pool filter sand and some of the ciclid gravel mix with the shells and stuff in it.

Whatever you want as long as it's not jagged. I think sand or bare would be much easier to maintain in a large tank like a mbu requires

i have gravel in it now, smooth cichlid gravel, is that ok? or should i switch to sand? I have some burundi frontosa with it now, and the MBU seems to be fine

That should be fine... I use the Caribsea Aragonite also as a buffer. How is your MBU doing with the Frontosa. How large is your mbu and Frontosa. What size tank do you have.

well, this is kinda depressing, but dont worry, its just a temporary tank, frontosa are 4-6 in, and the MBU is 4 inches. I ue smooth cichlid gravel, and some caves and driftwood as decor. The tank is currently only a 90 gal, but im going to upgrade soon since the MBU grows pretty quickly. maybe trying to get a 500 gal or something like that. also, im probably going to add a jardini once its in the 500 gal, think thats going to be fine?? The jar would be small,

How soon are you going to upgrade... how many Frontosas do you have. Just be careful with water quality... MBUs are super sensitive to bad water. I would be doing weekly water changes to make sure your water is spot on. What are you feeding the mbu and Frontosa? Are you adding any cichlid salt or buffer ?

I currently have 5 frontosa in there and add a bit of salt after every water change. The water is cycled and I water change a lot. Although 500 gal water hanged would be a pain. I feed the frontosa bloodworms. And the MBU different kinds of shells, and mussels. Without the shell.
