I'm looking to add substrate to bring out the colors in my peacock bass and severums, just a thin layer. Im looking for a heavy sand with larger granules so it doesn't get kicked up into the filter intake. Looking for a yellow gold sand that's not white. I looked into hth pool filter sand and quickcrete pool filter sand.

Supernaturals sunset gold looks good but seems too thin.

Just wondering what some of you guys are using with ur bass and severums.

I used some Sunset Gold. Looks nice but it vacuums out when cleaning the substrate. It's very light. Ended up going with small river rocks.

If you consider the typical substrate found in the rivers of S America nature,......you may get the clues, these pics were taken in e tributary of the Rio Magdalena where Cichla orirocoensus and C intermedia are found.

I take photos of the habitat where I collect cichlids, and try to match substrate with whatever cichlids I catch.

You can try sand to mimic their natural riverbed environment or try fine gravel. But avoid anything sharp or large enough to harm the fish.
