I am setting up 2 Eheim 2217's in my 90 tank. Where is the best location to set up the intake & outflows in a dual filter setup? Should the outflows both be on the back aimed forward? Or at opposite ends (side walls of tank) aimed inward, toward each other? Have heard differing opinions but was curious as to what others have done. Thanks.

It's really all personal preference and how you want the outflow to circulate in the tank.

I usually have the intakes a couple inches from each end of the tank or sometimes 1/3 the tank length away from the short ends.

My spray bars are located on each short end of my 75G tank and I adjust it so the holes are facing somewhat down though they are easy enough to rotate depending on what you want to accomplish.

Rock structures, live plants, fish species and whether you want to keep debris off the substrate all come into play when deciding where to aim the spray bar holes.

Mounting the spray bar on the back wall of the tank can accomplish similar results as above so there is really no right or wrong way to install the spray bar. Putting it on the back wall requires either hanging the output J-pipe on the short ends of the tank or coming up with creative plumbing pieces so the J-pipe is on the back wall of the tank.

Intakes on both opposite sides of the tank. I highly recommend the prefilter so that you can remove detritus waste during the week rather than waiting to open up the canister to remove it.

As for the spray bar, it just depends how you want the water to flow, front to back, against each other, or in one direction (high flow fish prefer the one direction). I prefer to reduce the noise of the spray bar by submerging it and having it point to the water line at a 45 or so degree angle to cause surface turbulence.

Where did you get your prefilter? Sounds like a great idea.

if you have spare space, you can buy 2x more used 2215 or 2217 units (you need the bucket and head mainly) and use that as a dummy/prefilter full of filter wool. make sure you connect it with quick release valves for easy maintainance. you can also connect the spray to get a longer reach.

I like to set up my cannisters all in 1 corner. Both intakes and out takes on one side so the flow is going one direction. Don't like flows going all directions. I prefer the open spray bars and not the ones with tiny holes. Tank looks more clean with equipment on one side to me.
