some blackworm breeding facilities feed the worms runoff from chicken farms. this means blackworms are eating chicken poo....

just nasty!

Where California Blackworms come from
In the last few years the Blackworm Farms have dwindled down to two. All Blackworms are farmed by either Aquatic Foods or another California supplier.
Contrary to what is being told out there, there are only two Blackworm farms and both are in California

Here are some pics of the Blackworm Farm.

The first pic is of our three production ponds

The 2nd is our main harvesting pond. Worms
from the production ponds are moved to the
harvesting pond for 30 days.

This photo is of our cement purging pond.
Here we leave them for 5-7 days in a bare bottom
cement pond. ( no food allowed)

This photo is of our indoor falicity. Here we clean a 2nd and 3rd
time. What you see in this pic are 30 100-120 lb holding
tanks. We hold the cleaned worms here for 7-10 days.
Then transport them to our Airport wharehouse where they
are held and chilled down to 40-45 degrees and then shipped
via Fed Ex or out of Los Angeles airport.

I feed red wigglers and nightcrawlers to my puffers. They love them. I keep them in the basement in a rubbermaid together (probably around 65 degrees). I feed leftover veggies from the kitchen as well as corn meal. I make sure to keep the earth moist and I add small amounts of cardboard for the red wigglers to consume (without printing). The red wigglers produce great dirt for gardens, flowerbeds, etc.

Composting is indeed a great practice. I eliminates wastes and can also be used for growing great vegetation. I've been thinking about starting a compost bin of my own.

Great work!

I have to say that NONE of my fish would ever eat the red. The black is like candy to fish and only a treat. But I LOVE night-crawlers. They last forever fridge or no, and I have happy fat fishes. Really good info in this thread!

Night crawlers are what I use as well. They are the biggest out of the three which,in my eyes, is better because it only takes a few 9in ones to fill up my rays, and whatever doesnt get eaten, my geos are more than happy to fight over! I just ordered some from Rainbow worms and it was $56 shipped for 500 worms. the longest one I've seen in the batch was just about a foot long!

I've tried europeans and they were just so small and not worth what I paid. Whats good about them though is they dont have to go in the fridge..but I did find a number of them dried up on the carpet around the house..eewww...haha

all in all I am definately going to stick with Night Crawlers!!

Here.
There seems to be a lot of talk as of late, about the different types of worms available for commercially for ray feeding. This may help, so bump to the top.
