Anyone ever keep a dolphin cichlid solo in a tank with other species?

I a 1.75 inch dolphin cichlid in a 29 gallon community tank which was purchased 3 days ago. I have higher pH levels in my area so I'm giving this a shot against odds.

My question is about it's behavior. The dolphin swims up and down all day unless I walk to the tank and it gets super active waiting for food. It eats very well. But once it's done feasting it goes back to the same side of the tank swimming up and down the glass.

Is this normal? I'm assuming it sees it's reflection and thinks there's another buddy in the tank.

Tank has
2 neon tetra
5 red phantom tetra
2 buenos aires tetra
3 guppies
8 zebra dainos

The plan is to have the dolphin get to about 3.5 inches and it will be moved to a 56 gallon(existing) or possibly a 100(future upgrade) or 125 gallon tank.

Yup the Cytocara Moorii. I guess what I'm trying to throw out there is if anyone has had a single one that thrived? I know there's tons of stuff out there of what the "ideal" situation is for fish but for example I had 8 neon tetras at one point and 6 died and now I'm left with two. According to what you are told neon tetras need to be in schools and if they aren't they will get depressed and likely die. Well I had two neons for a year and they are doing well.

I may try to pick up another dolphin cichlid to see what happens.

It's not uncommon that a fish introduced to a new tank environment to pace back and forth all day long, Give him a few more days and he will calm down. I notice that you have no other cichlid in the tank, and without close or conspecies to interact with, his attention is focused on the new tank environment.

Hope so that's a good point
