Bocourti cichlid question

Is this fish
Theraps, Cichlasoma or cincelichthys?
All this time I've thought it was a vieja.
Also do these guys have different catch locations? I see some with beautiful oranges in the bottom of the flanks and some without
Thanks

cincelichthys is the current genus, it contains these and pearsei.

i don't know about catch locations but it stands to reason that different locales would have different microalgae's that could lead to differently colored specimens. my big male is ~13" and 2" wide lives with taller bodied tetras and synspila and a JD. Peaceful tank boss

Thanks for the help! These have really been catching my attention lately. If I wasn't maxed on space is my larger tanks I'd add one of these I believe. They're quite different and not seen an awful lot. Some but not a lot
So the bocourti is somewhat peaceful? In your experience at least? Sounds smart to oscars behavior?

The pearsei is another bruiser I like the look of

They are tanks, IME more territorial than aggressive being a larger herbivore they likely need a large territory to guarantee enough food. If keeping with other cichlids I would recommend a tank with at least a 6 foot run.
Pearsei are AWESOME- simple but pretty in their own right and often overlooked they are great fish.
These and Red Bay Snook are some lower aggression CA's that I think are not given their due

Agree on all accounts
The pearsei in a low light tank with an algae covered back glass. Dark natural substrate with dark corners he can slumber in an out of .. oh yeah lol. believe.
I've never really looked into the red bay snook cause of their size. I love their look but they're unattainable for me. I have a 6 foot tank but think the snook would out grow one of them I beleieve.
I've often heard on fb that the red dovii is sometime a cross between them and regular dovii.
Wonder if there's any truth to that

I believe that is an olde wives tale... the first dovii caught in the hobby was a red dovii, ended up being a female.
morphs like that aren't that uncommon but given how much they stand out they tend to live in deeper water, similiar to amphs or vieja fenestratus or convicts or even JD's.
I dont know how well a snook would fair with a dovii trying to spawn TBH

I don't believe snook are likely to reach their terminal size in an aquarium- i think they max out closer to like 14/16" the largest i had was about that size and friendly to me but peaceful to tankmates. Regrettably i sold both snook and pearsei some years ago to go for a more aggressive setup- that was a mistake.

My Cincilichthys pearsei and bocourt (I did not kept at the same time) outgrew my 150 gallon in a little over a year, and had to be moved to a 300 gal rubbermaid trough.
Great fish, in summer they kept my lawn free of dandelions.
Although not aggressive they became testy as the space shrank in the 150.
When they arrived, they were about 2.5" in April of 2013. by Dec 2014 they were at the size below
They even ate papyrus down to nubs, and I would occasionally see they chomping on drift wood in the tank.
For a while they were housed with Chguco intermedium
I had pearsei before getting a camera, so no shots of them, but same temperament, dietary preference and need for space.
I'd love to have either again, but not unless I could get a tank of 300 gallons or more.

Beautiful pictures duanes! I've been eyeing those 300 gallon rubbermaid.the 150 Rubbermaid also but the way they're built the 150 doesn't offer much room at the base. The 300 on the other hand is NICE. I wanna try a couple of them next year outdoors. I might even get one for the den if the woman is OK with it haha.

So the bocourti appreciates the tasty dandelion huh? I'll have to remember this and try it with the vieja when they start popping up again. Never would have thought of that

That's the directioni was leaning. I just can't see a snook fairing well with a dovii?? Especially not trying to endure a spawn. I do love the look of that red bay though and I didn't realize they tolerated tankmates. That opens up a lot of ideas for future plans.
