So I have had a bolivian ram for the last two years and I have never gotten a straight idea as to what the rams sex is. I have asked on other forums I have been on and didnt get much help either. Here are some pictures for help! Thanks!

Thats what I have figured this whole time! But I was told on a cichlid forum that is was female. But I think I agree with you! Thanks!

Yup, you were right. With Bolivians the most certain way to tell is the fin shape...the anal fins are more pointed on the male and the caudal features those extensions.

For illustrative purposes:

Male:

Female (with slight stress darkening -- camera shy):

Keep in mind his/her ram is over two years old, not a juvie. Doesn't look like the fins are as pointed as they should be for a male at that age.

I don't know - I'm just saying......had a pair for a while but had to give them away because the female was nuts....switched to GBRs...

Hermaphrodite Bolivian Ram? lol

Yeah, he's not quite as developed as some, but I would still say he's male based on those pictures.

I have to disagree. I have Bolivian Rams. The dorsal fin on this 2 year old fish shows the "small, medium, large" rays which points to female. The male Bolivian Ram has a distinct longer 3 ray which is quite obvious even in younger specimins. It also has a pink chest which also points to female. It's omniposter is in the female position as well.

Being a fancier of Bolivian Rams, I'd also say female.
Unless you can get a good clear shot of the ovipositor I would say based on what I can make out of it in the photo, the fish's coloration and finnage combined they all point toward female.

Hi. I agree it's a female.. especially if it's an adult. There is a forum called cichlid-forum.com In there the BRC Bolivian Ram Club is a thread and it has some good id photos etc to sex the bolivians. Blairo and Dutch Dude really know their rams. HTH.. Sue
