I have got a Sera canister filter for a tank of mine. it does not quite have the flow rate that I expected from it. it has a fairly large amount of filter media but it is not creating much flow in the tank.

Are there any potential problems with putting a second pump in-line on the return pipe to the tank to up the flow a bit and create some current in the tank?

The filter is designed for tanks up to 450 liters and my tank is 400.

Had to look Sera up.
Seems an Eheim copy, from the picture.
It would be a bad idea to try adding an external pump, either pushing or pulling water through your filter.
The only thing between you and wet feet is an "O" ring and a few MM of plastic.
Adding any more stress to it`s sealing system is just asking for trouble.
Want more movement, look to powerheads.
I`m a big fan of the Hydor line.

Agreed/ Adding pumps inline to a canister is a recipe for disaster.

Some are specifically designed to have inline pumps (Ocean Clears some to mind), but if you want a canister with more flow, I think you need to look for just that... a canister with more flow.
