I'm saving up money in hopes of getting a nice pair of bettas and everything I'd need to breed them...
I know most of the stuff in terms of breeding bettas, correct my information or add onto it if needed-
female should preferably be older than the male.
male should be young, bright, and healthy, otherwise the female will not choose to mate with him.
male and female should be prepared for breeding by feeding them high protein foods for a few weeks before introduction.
breeding tank should be filled with only a few inches of water and have some floating things for the male to build his nest under, as well as potential hiding places for the fry/female, preferably moss.
when introducing them, put the male in the breeding tank first, let him settle in, then introduce the female by putting her in something clear in the tank so they can interact and get used to eachother.
after a few days when the female seems to be responding to the male's methods of attraction and when he has a nest, release her into the tank.
if the female is not responding to his flaring or anything, remove her and only put her back in the clear container in the tank later to see if she responds then.
you will know if she responds if she swims with the male head down, with vertical stripes.
once they start embracing and laying eggs the male will pick up the eggs and put them in the nest.
the female may help, but she may also eat the eggs.
once they finish laying the eggs, remove the female.
the male will tend to the eggs/fry for the next few days until they are free swimming, then you remove him or else he will eat the free swimming fry.
free swimming fry can be fed microorganisms or baby brine shrimp.
brine shrimp can be used as a first food but is harder to catch, but apparently makes sure only stronger fish survive.
with baby brine shrimp you should only feed once a day.
start filling the tank back slowly every day.
only start water changes at a few weeks so you don't disturb the fry.
as they grow you can move up to larger food.
once young males start to show aggression separate them into their own tanks/jars.

now some questions about genetics and what would come of crosses-
what would you get from:
dragonscale x fish with normal scales
salamander x marble
koi x dragonscale
koi x dumbo
koi x salamander
giant x normal sized fish
salamander x dragonscale

Water needs to be warm - 78-80.
Vinegar eels are the easiest and least messy- and yes , BBS are important.

Love that pic!!
