I have never bred channa so kinda looking for advice. 2 of my 3 asiatica started showing signs of breeding so i removed to other individual, now for about 5/6 days these two are darting around each other and then wrapping them selves up in to a ball but still no sign of eggs. Now the male is started to look a bit battered with torn fins etc. Is there anything else i can do to speed up the process?

Here is a video of what they are doing (this vid is not mine but just an example)

some pairs need a lot of time to coordinate the spawning. So they do the wrapping for a long time. Just have to wait.

Mine did the wrapping thing frequently the first spring when the pair formed but no eggs produced, just mock spawning as part of the pairing process. They lived peacefully together for another year and when spring hit the next year the małe tried again and was promptly killed. The
female bit his tail clean off ,gutted & skinned him and left him to die...

Interestingly enough I saw the same in young gachua and Auranti balling during pairing but no fry, my bleheri built nests their first spring but again no fry. One member on here had several males balling with a single female (Auranti) before a pair formed.

I believe most channa will mock spawn the first spring if conditions are right but are too young to produce viable eggs.

Best of luck though it's a good sign if you see balling that you have got a pair , and that's step one!

Interesting. I am hoping they have at least have one successful spawn.

What are the ideal conditions to help with the process?

let them have time and no disturbance
