Breeding of Hydrocynus vittatus in aquarium

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Are those tank measurements really in mm? Or is that a typo and they should be in cm?

If it's mm...that seems like a really small tank for breeding an open-water, fast-swimming fish like a Tiger...doesn't it?

I think they may have had a pregnant female and she happened to lay eggs due to moving stress. But the eggs were probably infertile. But its fun to ponder on the possibility of these monsters becoming cheaper and more readily available.

In most of case, tank size dosen't matter when they really get matured and triggered enough to breed specially for very professional breeder like mr. Hiroshi.
The size of tank is on mm and they also bred asian arowana in same sized tank.
(Also he breed many other very challenging species too like Serrasalmus)

What book is that. Nice pics in it.
And the best tiger fish IMO.
Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for the cover pic .

I searched online and was only able to find one paper that discussed artificially breeding H. vittatus.
Contacted Zim lecturers in the conservation and Ecology dept. at a university not far from Lake Kariba who studied these fish in Lake Kariba. He didn't know of anyone, private or commercial, that was able to breed H. vittatus.
He thought it may be due to upstream migration conditions to spawn being difficult to replicate in a lab or aquarium.
