I'm thinking about how to set up a cichlid tank, and how to give lots of hiding spots affordably. I was thinking about checking out Lowe's and Home Depot for broken paver stones (like this http://www.lowes.com/pd_19193-215-104804201_4294728526__?productId=3018998&Ns=p_product_price|0) and trying to get them marked down, since they are broken. I figure I can stack them up in such a way that they will allow lots of hiding spaces, and also would add in some terra cotta pots. Is there any reason this would be a bad idea? Are stones like that treated with anything that would be bad for the fish?

I'm not sure if they have anything added to them but in all honesty your best bet for cheap/bulk stone is to go to a local landscaping supply or stoneyard. I paid around 6 dollars for 150 pounds of Delaware river rock up here, your mileage may vary but throwing that out there for ya.

I will check that out, thank you for the idea!

I found it to be most cost effective, especially when I tried out multiple types of stones before I settled on one that I liked. But clay pots work to, I don't like the color of them so I spray painted mine black with krylon fusion paint. Let it cure for approximately 24 hours and tossed it in. Been in there over a month, holding up well and didn't harm my flowerhorn in any way.

DO NOT USE PAVERS! brick pavers whiel cheap and easy to come by, are similar to cinder blocks as they ar ebtoh made of concrete. as many know concrete leachs chemicals that are detrimental to fish. IMO i'd stay away and go with river rock if you can.

You can get nice looking, inexpensive flag stone at almost any landscaping place. The rocks in this setup only cost me $20 :naughty:
They'll usually have a discard pile that you can pick through. Broken pieces, stuff that's to thick or to rounded, or discolored.

I would stay away from paving stones.

Love the discard pile. A place around here just gives me the discards.
