Ive decided to build a dual stand for my two 75 gallon tanks so that i may get rid of the ten foot stand they are on now. Ive drawn something up in paint and was hoping to get some advice for improvements or better overall strength. I intend on using 2x6 for everything, but wonder if perhaps on the long uprights if it would be stronger to use a few 2x8's as well as a 2x6. I hope you can make out my drawing and I look forward to advice before i start in the next couple days. Thank you.

Your current stand will hold a couple semis, won't it?? Definitely save that one for down the road if you get ahold of a 10' tank. As far as your current plans, I'm subbing to this thread because it's exactly what I'm wanting to do (or get my husband to do). 2x6's are more than overkill, but that's what I'm going to use also. I see no need for 2x8's. The pressure is downwards/verically. Even a 2x4 has tremendous downward strength. I've got a 75 g 8" up off the floor and I know the syphoning is super slow. My only suggestion is to put the bottom tank as high as you can. I'm going to try to put my bottom tank 12" up off the floor.

It looks good to me. Your old stand looks very sturdy. I concur with the above statements. Syphoning from the floor sucks and you want to make sure you have adequate clearance. It would also suck to complete your project only to find that you have inadequate clearance.

Thanks for the advice. Ive planned for 8" of clearance above each and hopefully it will be enough to service my ac 110's. Im planning on several vertical supports but it worries me a bit that they will only be on the ends of the frame.

Im not sure if the horizontal 2x6's on the vertical supports underneath the above frame are a good idea or not. Im thinking it might add strength to the structure as there are no middle vertical supports but I would like advice incase it might hurt strengthwise or if there is a better way. Thanks again.

I will be able to reach them only from the front. I have decided not to build higher than the upper tank as the design now puts the top of the tank at about 64". The horizontal 2x6's ive mentioned above i now colored red incase it could not be noticed in the picture.

Here is the first one i did. It was for 3 60gal tanks and used 2x4 for the verticals and 2x2 for the horizontals. There is a 10'' space between the the tanks and its a perfect fit for the AC 110.

I didnt like how low the bottom tank was so i did it different for my 40gal tanks.

Using 2x8 would be overkill. You could use 2x4 all around and it will still be strong, but you could use 2x6 for piece of mind.

Rexfish, that's truly a work of art! Completely awesome! I am SOOOO going to get my husband to do one that way!!! In the space where I've got a 55 g tank right now I could stack 2 more there, what a wonderful idea (yea, I'm excited). My stand for my 6' Plec tank is 42" tall & in the same room, I already have to use a step ladder that stays in that room. Which happens to be my computer room. Do you think it would be pushing it to make a triple stand like that for three 75 g tanks?? I think that'd work because a 75 g isn't any taller than my 55 g tanks. You guys are wonderful, I"m so glad he started this thread :-))
