Hey guys! I have been wanting some kind of catfish for awhile, and my store is carrying a speckled bullhead. It is somewhere around 5 inches long. It will be going in my 75gallon turtle tank with my 4 1/2 inch RES, 2 inch long jack dempseys, and 2 1/2 inch pink belly side neck. Will the cat eat my pink belly and my jacks? Thanks for your help!!

I'd not risk it either. I don't think the chance is high and things would depend on how well you will feed your bullhead but in the best of circumstances, the chance is not too small. I'd recommend something not too predatory, like a synodontis.

BTW, it will grow to a foot and gain lots of bulk. 75 gal for one bullhead may be too small in about 2 years.

As far as tank mates I think it would work. My 7in JD gets along just fine with my 7in bullhead, but a 75gal would be pushing it for space when they get bigger.

Hey Bulldovii, now I am curious too. Have you noted that the catfish woud be 5" and JD's are 2" ?

Right now I have a 7 inch bullhead, 7 inch JD, 1.5 inch Cory, 2 inch bluegill, 5 inch sunfish, 4 - 2 inches clown loaches, and 2 - 1.5 inch convicts in my 150. Most of the fish including the bullhead have been in there for about a year.

A bullhead of that size cant fit a 2in JD in its mouth. My 7 in bullhead would have a hard time fitting that in his mouth.

Both fish have had about the same growth rates but the JD has recently slowed quite a bit and the bullhead has kept going so that shouldn't be a problem.

The jd and cons both seem to be very aware of what a catfish is and many times chase him around the tank.

I previously had a 10-11 in bullhead in the tank with most of these fish. Only once did he harm any of the fish and that was when I first got my convicts at about an inch long and one swam right in his mouth. So I can't fault him for that. I ended up having to remove him because the JD and a larger male convict both at about 4-5 in repeatedly beat him up.

This is why I think there is not an issue with keeping a 2 inch JD with a 5 inch bullhead.

Thanks! Nice account. You know what? I just read the other one of the OP's current threads and he says he has two 1" JDs, not one 2" JD - see the OP here: http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?525675-Catfish-for-my-75-Gallon.

Still, I largely agree, bullheads are scavengers, not hunters and your account is an excellent support to that. It is still a small risk, is all I was trying to say. So, I don't think we are in any disagreement at all :) Thanks again.

Totally agree. But like you said there is a chance that things could go south. I think anytime a catfish is entered into the equation there is that chance due to their unpredictability.

My bullheads don't really seem to be interested in eating fish and I've kept them with things small enough to be dinner, but they don't go after them. I had one in with some pbass I was growing out and it never even went for the guppies I was feeding the pbass.

Great. I love when things are consistent. The only caveat is that neither BullDovii nor Duncan mentioned what bullhead species they report about. There could be differences for different species, but may be not? That may be the next level of learning.
