I have a 400gal pond with a jag cichlid, oscar, gt, and 2 tinfoil barbs. I want to keep walking catfish (Clarias batrachus). I did a lot of research and I was told it needs to be in a 600gal minimum. Is that true or can I keep it in my pond?
Clarias batrachus tend to max out at around 18” from experience. Because they are an eel type cat they can manouver very well in tight spaces.
Not sure on the dimensions of your pond but at first thought I would not have a concern 400g was too small for a pair. The benefit being of course that they are clearly visible from above if you get the marbled or white version.
Moreover, the footprint is more important for a catfish like this than the water depth and your footprint is great for a 400 gal.
Plus, if you get a captive bred one (I believe all the white and piebald ones to be such), chances are it'd be a cull from a farming operation and hence will hardly reach its full potential size.
