The 2217 is reliable but a bit long in the tooth...technology wise. The 360 is far simpler to use and much more advanced. Both are good canisters for the money but the 360 has better water flow and is a bit more versitile IMO. I still have 25 year old marineland magnums that work so I seriously doubt reliability is going to be an issue.

I've had a 2217 for 3 weeks... I really like it! Easy to setup and use, and the thing truly is silent.

Noise doesn't bother me at all, but you literally can't hear it. The 55g tank in my room (like 3 feet from my bed) has the 2217, and all I hear are my air pumps.

I don't like that clear green colour of the intake and output stems though :)

The output is pretty powerful, and does an awesome job circulating the tank.

I just set up an Eheim 2217 in my 300 gallon (half full) snapping turtle tank. It replaces the Eheim2017 that was on the tank. When I contacted the factory about a new impeller for the 2017 they said it hadn't been manufactured since 1983! (I was given the filter with the tank and didn't know it was THAT old).

Anyways, I have had Magnum canister filters, but never a 360. I think that the Eheim is better, but Marineland makes nice stuff , too.

Really both are good filters, but comparing the two is difficult. The equivalent model in eheim would be the 2028. Personally, I prefer eheim.

This may be true, but as far as budgeting they are a similar price. Looking at the specs, and I know they can be misleading...

GFPH Aq size Can H Can Diam Media Cap Inlet Outlet Watts
360 360 100g 17" 13 3/4 x 7 3/4" 3.4 Gal 5/8" 5/8" 35
2217 265 135g 15" 7" 6 liter 5/8" 1/2" 20

I don't understand how the 2217 should be for a 135g and the 360 for 100g, the 360 has approx 13 liters of media cap, vs 6, and a stronger flow 360 vs 265.

Sounds like one is more efficient than the other, it also could be marketing hype... Almost like published printer speeds, how many pages per second? it's all bulls#$@

Is one filter flow rated with or w/o media ?

What I'm getting at is it's hard to cross reference products when the information provided may be slanted towards positioning the products within a class or family using different test parameters ..:naughty:

Price is the worst thing to compare filters by. The eheim can do more for a few reasons. One the media has far more surface area than the marineland media, second, for biological filtration, slower flow rates create longer contact times with the media, causing better filtration.
