Hello
I have been wondering if catfish stings are a true thing?
Do catfish create venom or what produces the sting?
Does anyone have any pics of a catfish sting?
If so what kind of catfish can sting you?

there are saltwater catfish that are venomous...(googling for venomous saltwater cat)...
Plotosus lineatus, thats the name

as far as i know, and atleast for the majority of freshwater catfish they are not venomous, however there "stingers" i guess you could call them which are on the leading adges of there pectoral and dorsal fins are more like barbs and do carry a large amount of dangerous bacteria, much as what is in a lizards mouth such a komodo dragon or monitor lizard, any wound sustained from a catfish should be immediatley flush with sterile water and cleaned out thuroughly. a good course of atleast topical antibiotics and possibly even oral antiobitics would be advised as well.

on the other hand however ive been stung a couple times by the barbs and havent cleaned them out, they are definatley sore for a few days to a few weeks though and i could easily see how a deep puncture wound from one of these could esily entire the blood stream and cause major problems.

almost all catfish have barbs atleast on there dorsal fin if not there pectoral(side) fins. it is the hard leading edge of these fins, if you look closely you can see how this forward edge is much thicker and harder than the rest of the fin. in addition when netter these fins can easily poke through the net and cause problems, getting the fish entangled damaging the fins. that is why most catfish keepers use the semi hard rubber nets or very fine mesh nets, much like those used for brine shrimp.

what kind of catfish do you have or are you considering getting, most can become very docile and many people even hand feed there cats. search the catfish forum for videos and pictures of this

There are some Cats out there with some such as the Stinging Catfish (Heteropneustes Fossilis) that produces a venom that can be quite painful. It more likely won't kill you, but it's best to see a doctor if they ever sting you.

:iagree:

i have two pictus, i netted one and like an idiot thought i could sex
it, and if it looked like cichlids underbellys.
I poked through the net, and it stung burned pretty bad,
and would throb ive been sore for three days.
I was thinking they had venom like bees or something.
Because it never stopped hurting

the pain is most likely caused by the bacteria, the barbs are solid bone and not hollow so there no room for any venom, the bacteria is found on the exterior of the skin and in the slime

I have been jabbed by FW cats and SW sail-fin cats. The SW cat seamed to have something extra in the slime coat on the barb it hurt much more, pain lasted longer, and took longer to heal.
