I have a poly tank with a black background and black sand. I want to change it because it just looks too dark. I want to replace the black sand with tan colored pool filter sand and add a bunch of fake plants. My polys colors are pretty good right now. I have some delhezis and endlis and both of them have dark stripes. I was wondering if I change to tan colored sand if that will make my bichirs colors fade or look washed out?

It shouldn't affect them too much. I have a dark tank with a dark blue background and black sand. I had some Pollis in there which were really dark. I moved them to the bigger tank which has a more natural look. They lighten up a bit and they look better.

If it's the striping your concerned about you'll be good. It will change their base color though. I keep mine in tan sand and once they get comfortable the get great contrast but for the most part they are lighter that's for sure.

i have white sand in my tank. my sen has kind of a pinkish hue.

Expect them to fade out

I JUST ADDED SOME NICE MEXICAN RIVER ROCK TO MY TANK I HAD BLACK BACK WITH GLASS BOTTOM. THE RIVIER ROCKS COLORS ARE DIFFERENT SHADES OF GREY AND BLACK. MY BICHIRS COLORS LOOK BETTER FROM IT PLUS I THINK THEY LIKE IT MORE. IM TRYING TO ADD IN SOME HIDING SPOTS TOO FOR THEM TO FEEL MORE COMFORTABLE.

I went from natural gravel to black substrate and to me the black brings out the colors in my bichirs more than the gravel did. I use 3M Spetraquartz in my tank and I think its pretty nice. They have a wide variety of colors to choose from including brown, tan, and red substrates so if you're going for that natural look you might want to check it out.
