By the lines below the eye, there's a possibilty it is a female, which might account for the slower growth, females tend to grow slower.

Plus I read and heard from breeders that males even have slow to moderate growth. Up to 8 inches the first year.Nice one

Yea mine doesn't have any honeycomb red patterns. Yours look awesomeNice fish.
I would adress it as a male because females develop a red net or honeycomb pattern on the belly in most cases while the male have red dots.
