Hello. I am looking for someone with experience with raising a chinese algae eater or keeping one in the past. I am not interested in what people might have heard or read online. Looking for people with experience mainly.

I would like to know everything about chinese algae eaters, their compatibility, and dietary habits. What is their growth rate. At what point do they "mature" and change from vegetarian to omnivorous to mainly protein. What is their behavior like with silver dollars as they get older. I am worried about their diet and how it changes over time. Also worried about their behavioral changes and variables that will effect these. I want to know all about your experiences with these fish. Pros and cons and scenarios which you can recall to the best of your ability.

This is my setup: Almost 2 yearly aquarium which is fully established. 55 gallon tank with 80 gallon marineland hang on back filter. Mostly small grain gravel with a mix of slightly bigger size gravel. Driftwood. Moderately planted with 6-8 inch java fern. One cave but decent hiding spots around the driftwood. Aquarium heater.

Tank Stats: temperature around 78 degrees Fahrenheit. PH is around 6 soft. Ammonia is 0. I honestly don't know nitrites and trates. However i do weekly changes on 20%. And my aquarium has moderate amount of vegetation so I'm not worried about trites and trates.

These are my fish: 5 spotted silver dollars which are all roughly 2 inches. One chinese algae eater which is roughly 1.25 inches. Silver dollars are super active like they are on crack. Not in a skittish way, Constant swimming back and forth. CAE is always always grazing on walls and gravel.

What i feed them currently: Silver dollars eat mainly a lot of tetra flakes. Some bloodworms and cichlid pellets. SAE have been grazing non stop on algae that i previously had. Grazing on gravel. Blanched some baby cucumbers today and they graze it a little but is not too interested.

I currently have a full grown Chinese algae eater in 75 planted.
I can’t really answer all your questions.
I can tell you that it doesn’t bother any of the other fish, one of which is a silver dollar.

I also have bristle nose plecos that I feed zucchini and sweet potatoes.
The CAE feeds with the plecos. It especially likes the zucchini.
It will grab a sinking pellet now and then.

Used to keep 6 Chinese algea eaters with 5 red bellied pirahna and around 16 red jewel cichlids in a 150g. The algae eaters fed on mussel, frozen bloodworm and coley fish bits from around 3" and some reached 6" with a couple reaching 8". The tank had no plants other than giant vallis which they pretty much ignored. Never had any issues with them with either type of fish although they do tend to argue between themselves quite a bit. Don't seem particularly bothered about caves although if you have them, they become something to squabble over.
