Chocolate cichlid?

I picked this guy up yesterday from a local cichlid dealer. They were listed as chocolates. A few in the tank were more characteristically chocolate cichlid in appearance -- rounded foreheads, neon orange/red eyes, etc. This guy had nicer fins and some cool black streaks so I brought him home.

The more I look at pictures of chocolates online, the more I wonder if he's a true Hypselecara temporalis? He looks kind of elongated and has a weird-shaped mouth compared to most pictures I've seen. Is this just his juvenile appearance? Was he a poor quality fish? What are the chances he'll round out a bit as he grows and turn into a nice fish?

He's about 4.5" long and I have him in QT with a couple marble angelfish and a male Laetacara dorsigera. So far he reminds me of my old male port cichlid -- he follows my angels around (these were the same angels my port shared a tank with before he died) and tries to be friends. He's also scared of my dorsigera because the dorsigera twitches and postures when he swims by. It's kind of cute to watch.

i thought chocolate are brown, well the chocolate i ppicked up was brown haha..

It's hard to say. I'm seeing a lot of pictures of juvenile Hypselecara coryphaenoides that look like this fish. Then again, there are a few sites showing juvie temporalis with the same markings. I don't think this particular cichlid dealer would have the less-common variety.

His tankmates definitely had a more purple/maroon color to them. Maybe the combination of the moving stress and the light paint is washing him out. We'll see how he looks in a week or two.

I don't think he'd be a Hypselecara coryphaenoides, not just due to the insane rarity of that species ... but he's not as elongate as that species would be even at that size. The coloration deffinately looks like the cory, but the body shape is all temporalis.

I've never seen a chocolate looking anywhere near that light.

Then I have no idea what he is. lol. I'll just keep feeding it and see what happens. If you google "Hypselecara temporalis" you'll find a few pictures that look similar to him, light tan color with elongated body and black line/blotch.

I thought coryphaenoides looks really dull compared to temporalis? Grey had some not long ago.
Coryphaenoides are dull as adults but as young both look similar Temporalis are rounder in all stages but you would need them near each other to actually notice it.. That individual will grow up then you can know unless you have picts. of the parents.
